Schwarzbier (black lager)

German: Schwarzbier Also known as: Dunkles Lager

A dark, bottom-fermented beer with mild roasted notes, lighter than stout.

Schwarzbier is a dark, bottom-fermented beer whose colour comes from dark roasted malt. Unlike stout, it seems lighter and cleaner; roast flavours are rather mild and recall chocolate, coffee or bread crust. Hop bitterness is moderate.

Alcohol content is usually 4.5 to 5 percent ABV. The style has roots in Thuringia and Saxony, where it is traditionally common. In the glass the beer looks deep brown to black, but often shows ruby tones against the light. Schwarzbier goes well with grilled food, game and chocolate desserts.
