Barrel-aged beer

German: Barrel Aged Beer (Fassgelagertes Bier) Also known as: Barrel Aged, BA Beer, Fassgereiftes Bier

Beer that matures in wooden barrels after fermentation and takes on aromas from the wood and former contents.

Barrel-aged beer matures for weeks to months in wooden barrels, often used whisk(e)y, wine or rum casks. The beer takes up aromas of wood, vanilla and previous contents and may develop slight oxidative notes.

Strong beers such as imperial stout, barleywine or doppelbock are especially common. Depending on prior cask contents and duration, a wide range of flavours arises. Good barrel ageing is therefore a craft and not a standard procedure.
