Export lager
German: Export Also known as: Dortmunder Export, Export-Bier
A mild, bottom-fermented beer with slightly higher original gravity than Pils; originally brewed for shipping out of town.
Export is a pale to golden bottom-fermented beer with an original gravity of about 12 to 14 percent and an alcohol content of about 5 to 5.6 percent ABV. It is less bitter than Pils and maltier in taste.
The name recalls that these beers were originally brewed stronger to survive transport outside the brewing town or abroad. The style became especially known in Dortmund as Dortmunder Export. Today Export plays a smaller role in most breweries' ranges than Pils and Helles, but is still found regionally. The taste is round, moderately hopped and easily drinkable.
