Barista

Pronunciation: [ba-ri-sta]

A professional who prepares and serves coffee drinks, especially espresso-based specialities.

A barista prepares espresso, cappuccino, latte macchiato and other coffee specialities. This includes grind size, dosing, extraction and steaming milk. Care and adjustment of the machine and grinder are also part of the job.

The title is not protected, but courses and competitions exist. A good barista knows bean origin, roast and sensory aspects and can advise guests accordingly. Besides espresso, filter coffee, cold brew and milk alternatives are often part of a good coffee bar's repertoire.
