Reusable offer obligation
German: Mehrweg-Angebotspflicht (Gastronomie) Also known as: Mehrwegangebotspflicht, Mehrwegpflicht
Since 2023, hospitality businesses must also offer take-away food and drinks in reusable packaging.
Since 1 January 2023, anyone selling take-away food or drinks in single-use plastic packaging or disposable beverage cups must also offer a reusable alternative. The reusable option may not cost more than the single-use one, deposit aside. Customers must be informed about the offer.
Small businesses with at most five employees and at most 80 square metres of sales area are exempt, but must fill containers brought by customers. These rules have been in the Packaging Law Implementation Act since August 2026 (previously in the Packaging Act). The applicable regulations are authoritative.
