Fruit spirit (Geist)
German: Geist Pronunciation: gaist Also known as: Himbeergeist
A spirit from fruit steeped in neutral alcohol and then distilled, such as raspberry Geist. The spirit is aromatic and fresh.
Geist denotes a distillate from fruit, berries or other plant parts that are first steeped in alcohol (macerated) and then distilled. The method suits raw materials with little sugar of their own that hardly ferment, such as raspberries or blackberries.
The alcohol for steeping is agricultural ethyl alcohol. The distillate is very aromatic and usually clear. Raspberry Geist is well known. An important distinction: a Geist is not a fruit brandy in the narrow sense, even if served in similar glasses. The applicable regulations are decisive.
