French press
German: French Press Also known as: Stempelkanne, Kaffeepresse
A coffee pot in which ground coffee steeps in hot water and is then pressed down with a mesh plunger.
In a French press, coarsely ground coffee is covered with hot water and steeps for a few minutes. A metal mesh on the plunger is then slowly pressed down and separates the grounds from the drink.
Because there are no paper filters, oils and fine suspended particles reach the cup. This makes the coffee fuller in body but also cloudier. If the coffee is left in the pot after pressing, it keeps extracting and can turn bitter.
