Aroma wheel
German: Aromenrad Also known as: Geschmacksrad, Aromarad
A graphic overview that arranges aromas in groups and subgroups, helping to name scent and flavour impressions.
An aroma wheel is a circular chart in which aromas are divided ever more precisely from the inside to the outside. At the centre are broad groups such as fruity, floral, spicy or roasted, on the outer ring specific terms such as lemon, violet, pepper or caramel.
It serves as a memory aid and a shared language for tasters, because naming smells is hard for many people. There are aroma wheels for wine, beer, whisky, coffee and other drinks. They are aids, not fixed rules: what matters is what one actually perceives, not what is printed in the wheel.
