Tasting
German: Verkostung Also known as: Degustation, Tasting, Verkosten
A systematic examination of a drink with eyes, nose and palate to judge appearance, aroma, taste and quality.
In a tasting a drink is perceived deliberately and step by step. First the appearance is checked, then the scent, then the taste in the mouth and finally the aftertaste. Notes help to record impressions and compare them with others.
Tastings take place in trade, in production, at competitions or at home. Neutral conditions matter: a suitable glass, the right temperature, a room without strong smells, and water or bread between samples. The order of samples also plays a role, usually light before strong and dry before sweet.
