Minerality

German: Mineralik

Contested tasting term for stony, salty or chalky impressions in wine.

In wine tasting minerality describes impressions reminiscent of stone, chalk, flint or salt. The term is often used for wines from poor soils such as slate or limestone.

Whether and how soil minerals directly influence taste has not been scientifically settled. The impression often relates to acidity, reduction or low fruitiness. The term is therefore descriptive, not a confirmed statement about origin.
