Sweetness

German: Süße Also known as: Lieblichkeit

The sweet taste impression, mainly caused by sugar but also influenced by alcohol and glycerol.

Sweetness is one of the basic tastes and is triggered primarily by sugar. But alcohol, glycerol and some aromas can also give an impression of sweetness. Whether a drink seems sweet also depends on acidity: a lot of acidity masks sugar, little acidity makes the same drink seem sweeter.

In wine, sparkling wine and beer, degrees of sweetness are described with terms such as dry, off-dry or sweet. Sweetness can feel balancing, round and soft, but with too much sugar heavy and sticky. The interplay of sweetness and acidity is regarded as the basis of many drinks.
