Armagnac
Pronunciation: ar-man-jak
French brandy from Gascony, usually distilled once in a continuous apparatus and often more rustic than cognac.
Armagnac comes from Gascony in south-western France and is the oldest brandy region of the country. Typical is a special column apparatus in which distillation takes place only once. This preserves much of the grapes' own aroma.
It is aged in oak barrels, often of local wood. Armagnac is available as a blend or as a vintage spirit, which is less usual with cognac. Compared with cognac it is regarded as stronger and more rustic. Age classes range from VS to Hors d'Âge. The origin is protected.
