Altbier

Also known as: Alt

A dark copper, top-fermented beer with a bitter character, traditionally from Düsseldorf and the Lower Rhine.

Altbier, or Alt for short, is a top-fermented, copper-brown beer with strong hop bitterness and malty depth. The “Alt” (old) refers to the older, top-fermenting brewing method retained in the region while bottom-fermented beers rose elsewhere. After fermentation it is stored cold.

The taste is tart, dry and somewhat nutty-malty, with alcohol typically at about 4.5 to 5 percent ABV. Typical is serving in small cylindrical glasses in Düsseldorf brew houses. A speciality is Sticke Alt, a stronger version brewed only on a few dates per year. Alt is often enjoyed with hearty food such as mustard and sausage.
