Cleaning in place

German: CIP-Reinigung Also known as: Cleaning in Place, Anlagenreinigung

Cleaning tanks, pipes and filling lines in a closed system with caustic, acid and hot water, without dismantling.

CIP stands for cleaning in place. Tanks, pipes and equipment are flushed from the inside with cleaning solutions without being taken apart. A sequence of pre-rinsing, cleaning with caustic or acid, intermediate rinsing, disinfection if needed and final rinsing is usual.

Cleanliness is central in drink production because residues encourage germs and off-flavours. CIP saves time and ensures reproducible results. Temperature, duration, concentration and flow are controlled and documented. After cleaning, thorough rinsing is necessary so that no residues end up in the drink.
