Finish

German: Abgang (Finish) Pronunciation: fi-nisch Also known as: Finish, Nachhall, Nachgeschmack

The aftertaste of a drink after swallowing: how long and in what way flavours and aromas remain.

The finish is the impression that remains after swallowing. Length and character are assessed: it can be short or long, soft, spicy, bitter, sweet or dry. A long, pleasant finish is often seen as a sign of quality because aromas continue to unfold.

For whisky, wine and beer the finish is judged separately, often with descriptions such as short, medium or long. Warmth in the throat with high-proof drinks is also part of it. A harmonious finish rounds off the overall picture, a disturbing one spoils it.
