Aseptic filling
German: Aseptische Abfüllung Pronunciation: a-sep-tisch Also known as: Aseptik, Steril abfüllen
Filling a previously sterilised drink into sterile packaging under germ-free conditions.
In aseptic filling, drink and packaging are sterilised separately and only brought together in a germ-free zone. The drink is, for example, briefly heated strongly and cooled, while the package is sterilised with hydrogen peroxide, heat or radiation.
As a result, products such as milk drinks, juices or iced teas keep for a long time even without refrigeration, without needing prolonged heating. The method requires complex equipment and strict hygiene. Typical packaging includes cartons and certain plastic bottles.
